BlueRep's Sweet Charity

03 March 2006

I watched last night the gala premiere of bluerep's version of Sweet Charity at the intimate Rizal Mini Theatre. I really had no idea of the play except the fact that it was a musical.

Starring the play was Ms. Angela Primavera, most probably related to a churchmate (UP CRL) Karlo since I saw him there watching from the VIP seats.
Anyhow, the play started quite shaky but it picked up its momentum after a few minutes.

Charity works as a hostess for the Fan-Dango ballroom. There was a scene when Charity animatedly narrated to her co-hostesses what happened earlier that morning. I just noticed that some actresses played their part a little too virginal.

Scenes to watch out for are the Pompeii Club, the Rhythm of Life Church, and the duet of "Baby, Dream your Dream" (which was greatly sung by promising singers Kathleen Teodoro and Laura Cabochan)! Superb acting from Shark Alonso who played Vittorio Vidal robbing the spotlight from Jeffrey Ramos who essayed Oscar Lindquist.

Despite the occassional breathing problem by Angela while singing (maybe due to the commendable choreography), she gave justice to the role she portrayed. She looked like Reese Witherspoon playing this role!

I just hope Director Chari Arespacochaga remedies the transition from one scene to the other to minimize dead air and an empty stage. The lighting design could still be improved to create a more accurate atmosphere in each setting.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. Was it a tragic ending or otherwise? All I can say is that "she lived HOPEFULLY ever after".

Oh, I miss theater!!!
